Fearing Taliban, Pak Hindus take Thar Express to India

JAISALMER: In the past four years, some 5,000 Hindus may have crossed over from Pakistan, never to return :o . It has not been easy abandoning their homes, sometimes even their families, but they say they had no choice :( they had to flee the  Taliban  .

It started as a trickle in 2006, the year the Thar Express was flagged off. The weekly train starts from Karachi, enters India at Munabao, a border town in Barmer, and runs up to Jodhpur. In the first year, 392 Hindus crossed over.

This grew to 880 in 2007. The next year, the number was 1,240, and this year, till August, over 1,000 have crossed over. They just keep extending their visas and hope to become Indian citizens.

Incidentally, these are official figures. Sources say there are many more who cross over and melt in the local milieu. And officials have a soft corner for these people, most of whom have harrowing stories to tell.

Ranaram, who used to live in the Rahimyar district of Pakistans Punjab, says he fell prey to the  Taliban  . His wife was kidnapped, raped and forcibly converted to Islam  . His two daughters were also forcibly converted  . Ranaram, too, had to accept Islam for fear of his life. He thought it best to flee with his two daughters; his wife was untraceable.

Dungaram, another migrant, says atrocities against Hindus in Pakistan have increased in the past two years after the ouster of Musharraf. "We won't get permanent jobs unless we convert to Islam."

Hindu Singh Sodha, president of Seemant Lok Sangathan, a group working for the refugees in Barmer and Jaisalmer, says there's unfortunately no proper refugee policy in India even though people from Pakistan reach here in large numbers.

He said in 2004-05, over 135 families were given Indian citizenship but the rest are still living illegally in the country and are often tortured by police because they don't have proper citizenship certificates  . "In December 2008, over 200 Hindus were converted to Islam in Mirpur Khas town of Pakistan  . But there are several others who want to stick to their religion but theres no safety for them in Pakistan."

Immigration officer at Munabao railway station, Hetudan Charan, says the arrival of Hindu migrants had suddenly increased as over 15 to 16 families were reaching India every week. None of them admit they are to settle here but seeing their baggage, we easily understand, he said.

Ravi Kumar, who was Barmer collector till his transfer two days back, said the government in 2007 had given permanent citizenship to a few Pakistani immigrants.

Unfortunately these things are common in Islamic culture and often go unpunished. We should all be used to this by now....This is the most convenient way of spreading Islam too. India should request Pakistan to send remaining Hindus(there aren't much left) from Pakistan so that at least they could live in dignity.

There is much to doubt in this report. Why Pak Hindus would travel 1400 - 2000 KM from Punjab to catch Thar Express in Karachi when Indian borders are only couple of hundred KM away from most punjab cities. There have been no reports in national and international media of Pak Hindus being targeted by Talibans in any Punjab city of Pakistan. The Times of India report has not indicated if the claims of migrating Pak hindus have been researched/checked by their editorial board or journalist. And who knows who these migrating people are. The report provides/mention of no supporting evidence of these families nationality and domicile. It is a strong possibility that Times of India have fabricated this story to divert attention from the reports critisising Indian authorities for fake police encounter that was staged to kill four innocent muslims.

In general, unlike India, Pakistani courts have always been swift to take action on atrocities suffered by Pakistanis with other religious belief. And thats why situation for Hindus in Pakistan is not as bad as it is for Indian muslims particularly in Gujarat and generally in India where they are subject to state terrorism. The world has not forgotten the pictures of tortured and burnt alive muslims men and women of Gujrat during the state government planned and orchestrated racial riots. Thats why there is antoher reason to fabricate such reports to show the world that India is not the only human-rights violating nation. But alas for india media no one trust such ill-will reports fabricated by ill-reputed journalists like Vimal Bhatia of Times of India.

1. Kidnapping , rape are crimes and these are not limited to any specific society. So called civilized societies of world have high rate of these crimes.

2. Pakistan is a Muslims country, but unfortunately people of Pakistan are not practicing Islam as according to its spirit, It judicial system is practicing colonial laws. (Saudi Arabia is practicing Islamic laws and they have very low rate of these crimes).

3. Minorities of Pakistan are in far far better position than Indian minorities.

NEW DELHI, Feb 4: A UN report has slammed the pervasive climate of fear and intolerance perpetuated by religious mobs in many parts of India, and asked the government to provide effective protection to the minorities of whom Christians and Muslims in particular were vulnerable, often helpless and increasingly ghettoised.

Even though a comprehensive legal framework to protect freedom of religion or belief does exist, many of (the) interlocutors, especially from religious minorities, remain dissatisfied with its implementation, a report on India by Ms Asma Jahangir, Special Rapporteur on freedom of religion and belief, said. A copy of the UN document was made available to Dawn on Wednesday.

Organised groups claiming roots in religious ideologies have unleashed an all-pervasive fear of mob violence in many parts of the country, Ms Jahangir said. Law enforcement machinery is often reluctant to take any action against individuals or groups that perpetrate violence in the name of religion or belief. This institutionalised impunity for those who exploit religion and impose their religious intolerance on others has made peaceful citizens, particularly the minorities, vulnerable and fearful.

She encouraged specific legislation to prevent communal violence but cautioned that it should take into account the concerns of religious minorities so as not to reinforce impunity of communalised police forces at the state level.

Religious conversion

The laws and bills on religious conversion in several Indian states should be reconsidered since they raise serious human rights concerns, the report said. It focussed on religious discrimination applied in the way affirmative action was offered to the lowest castes.

The eligibility for affirmative action benefits should be restored to those members of scheduled castes and scheduled tribes who have converted to another religion, the report recommended. Christian and Muslim Dalits are denied benefits of affirmative action given to Hindu Dalits.

Ms Jahangir travelled in March last year to Amritsar, Delhi, Jammu, Srinagar, Ahmedabad, Mumbai, Thiruvananthapuram, Bhubaneswar and Lucknow where she met representatives of various religious or belief communities, including Bahais, Buddhists, Christians, Hindus, Humanists, Jains, Muslims, Sikhs and Zoroastrians.

The Special Rapporteur was impressed by the vigour with which many members of civil society organisations and artists, particularly by those affiliated with the film industry, are challenging discrimination based on religion or belief and are proposing concrete means how to overcome religious intolerance, the report said.

Ms Jahangir condemned the killing of Christians and the widespread destruction of their churches in Orissa. By the end of September 2008, more than 40 people had allegedly been killed in Orissa, over 4,000 Christian homes destroyed and around 50 churches demolished. Around 20,000 people were living in relief camps and more than 40,000 people hiding in forests and others places.

The Special Rapporteur was profoundly alarmed by the humanitarian situation in relief camps where access to food, safe drinking water, medical care, proper sanitary arrangements and adequate clothing were reportedly lacking.

Many Muslims were disturbed that terrorism was associated with their religion despite various public statements from Muslim leadership denouncing terrorism.

There have been complaints about a continuing bias among security forces against Muslims in Jammu and Kashmir who also seem to face difficulties with regard to the issuance of passports and security clearances for employment purposes, the report pointed out.

Regarding Proof :

1. The first video clip shows that Pak Hindu not being able to get Indian Embassy's cooperation in getting visas for India to perform immersion rituals in the Ganga for the dead sons. This video clip is not a proof to the fabricated story of Time of India that Pak hindus seeking refuge in India fearing Taliban.

2. The second video clip shows like many other Pakistanis, Sikh community members leaving troubled Swat area and moving in to Gurdwara Nankana Sahib in Lahore where a large Pakistan Sikh community resides. How could this be the proof that Pak Hindu seeking refuge in india fearing Taliban?? And how does this second video substantiate Time of India report contents. No, this is not a proof at all. But it is interesting to remind the contributor that Sikhs have not forgotton General Kuldeep and Operation Bluestar by Indian government against the Sikh community of India. Holy Golden Temple was burnt and bombarded to ground and thousands of Sikh men and women were killed by Indian Army.

So, yeah, getting back to "Regarding Proof:" videos, nothing in them suggest that Times of India report is not a fabrication by chauvinistic and ill-will journalist and media outlet (ToI).

I don't know where do these people get the facts and I am amazed and amused by some comments made by contra and Nepali pundit, dear you don't know ground facts, it's your media who does vigorous propaganda againmst Pakistan and Islam, we are the one religion who protects religious minorities and history has proven it than hdf nepali pundit you can say it's common in Islam and that's how Islam spread you pathetic hindus can't hide your hatred and your sick religion.

It was not Pakistan where hundreds and thousands of Muslims were raped and burned alive what did your government do, nothing and they staged mumbai to get rid of all the people who were in charge of investigations, gets your facts right when you post shit overall, outrageous and mudslinging at it's best, I have tons of christans and hindu friends who enjoy a very good life style and are happy in Pakistan, they never bothered about their businesses and stuff idk how your media makes these videos and how pathetic your media is which spread such kinda rumours just to show world that how bad Pakistan is, you can't stand the fact if we prosper or have better living standards and everything ...than you.

Few persons who are hindu and don't have good education or jobs want to escape and look for something in India, they know they don't have any other choice than to blam eon Taliban to get your governments approval to let them settle there and in return you want propaganda from them but you don't realise the fact that they were losers and won't have anything in Pakistan or India.

When they will go and see for themselves Indians life style and standard of living no doubt they will regret but ofcourse your media won't say that as they never revealled anything about your failed nuclear tests and missile tests. Let it go and suck it up, last time talibans were caught in swat they were hindus dressed in shalwar kameez with no...you know what I mean   dirty yuckkkk so I won't be surprised if they start raping their own hindu women and subjecting them to torture repeating same sick strategy mukti bahni did in bangladesh.

When will you grow up and stop posting non sense with no credible information or start posting how many dogs and dying in Pakistan or how many babies are born lol

I think that the responses given by my fellow pakistanis regarding the lack of the appropriateness of the proofs are sufficient and need not to be elaborated any further.

I would also like to add the fact that it is common for some people to move from one place to another for better economic returns. Specially the poorer people of the society. Due to the unforunate economic conditions of Pakistan it is reasonable for the financially poor Hinus to migrate to India.

I wouldn't say that non-muslims are treated very well in Pakistan but will be bold enough to say that there a lot of fabrications in stories of ill-treatment of non-muslims in Pakistan.

As far as the matter of Talibans are concerned, they have not forced their ideologies only on non-muslims but also the muslims that don't agree with them. They have killed and beheaded a lot of Pakistanis. They have even killed Benazir Bhutto, who was a muslim. Pakistani army and its people are currently at war with the Talibans.

To link the Taliban's values and actions to the masses of Pakistani people is not only unfair but also ridiculous.

1. Times of India is the most widely circulated English newspaper in India and one of the most reputed as well.

2. This is a mainstream newspaper my friends. Do you think they will carry such a story if they didn't have any proof?

3. You all are in denial.
In a country where a group of mullah's on TV call for the killing of a certain community(Ahmedi), and no action is taken by the government, there is no reaction from the public...what can be expected from you...denial!!!

The real face of Pakistani Islam is armed gangs going around beheading 'impure' humans, throw acid at women who don't wear burqa, ethnically cleanse minorities starting with making them wear distinct marks, fanatical about one book-one god everyone else goes to hell kind.

According to the International Labour Organization close to 250 million boys and girls between the age 5-14 are exploited and work in the most hazardous conditions. Indias child labour-force is estimated to be around 50 million. These children (5-14 year old) work in mines, gem stone polishing, brassware, agriculture, plantation, carpet industry, fireworks industry, etc.

The Hindu dogma of Karma is the driving force behind Brahimins social and class discrimination against the low-caste Hindus (Dalits) and other Indias minority groups. Karma dogma is that what you are today because of your bad karmas (deeds) in the previous birth hence to undo that one must stick to his/her duties. Brahimins, like Jews, too believe that theyre Gods Chosen People and the rest of the humanity is created to serve them

Rebecca Knuth in her book Burning Books and leveling libraries, wrote: In India, religious violence is so much a part of life that the Hindus have a special word for it: dharmikalrai, religious fight. Riots and protests have become commonplace there as Hindus and Muslims engage in conflicts over history (Muslims ruled India for over 1,000 years) and entitlements. The number of Muslim casualties has been disproportionately high, particularly in the 1980s. In organized massacres, hundreds, even thousands, of Muslims including women, babies and even old and handicapped, were killed and maimed; railroad passengers were pulled from their trains and lynched; the people were burned alive. The riots persist because they have become customary activity. The police do not interfere and sometimes participate out of sympathy with the Hindu cause
