The NSW Court of Appeal has upheld cricketer Chris Gayle's $300,000 defamation win against publications including The Sydney Morning Herald and The Age despite finding his barrister "went too far" in parts of his closing address to the jury in a way that was "not fair" to a witness.

In a judgment on Tuesday, the court dismissed an appeal against Mr Gayle's victory brought by the Herald, The Age and The Canberra Times, and ordered the publications to pay costs. It also dismissed a cross-appeal brought by Mr Gayle to increase the size of his damages payout.

Mr Gayle successfully sued the publishers behind the mastheads in 2017 over a series of articles in January 2016 which alleged he had exposed himself to massage therapist Leanne Russell in a dressing room during the 2015 Cricket World Cup in Sydney.
