Brazilian Players & fans crying after defeat from Germany

The first goal came like a bolt from the blue. But they kept singing in support of their team. The second goal cut down the volume of singing. By the time the ball was sent into the netting behind Julio Cesar for the fifth time, almost all Brazilian eyes in the stadium were wet. In the second half as the humiliation reached 7-0, women were crying and little children had buried their heads in the arms of their parents. With the final score reading Germany 7, Brazil 1 and the hosts’ humiliation complete, even television commentators had a lump in their throats and tears in their eyes.

Brazil began their world cup campaign with 11 men in yellow jerseys fighting back tears and choking as more than 65,000 people sang the national anthem at the opening game on June 12 at Itaquerao in Sao Paulo. On July 8, at the Mineirao in Belo Horizonte, no player shed a tear when the anthem was played. They looked firm and relaxed. But two hours later the players had collapsed into a huddle of men crying like babies. The stadium was getting empty fast, with queues of silent crowds leaving it as fast as they could.

On Tuesday evening, just before the game began in Belo Horizonte, a tropical storm blew over Rio de Janeiro, bringing down water in sheets and columns. But, braving the high-speed winds and rain, more than 35,000 people gathered at the Copacabana beach to watch the Brazil-Germany semi-final on big screens. They had come there with their trumpets, drums and pipes. In the first 20 minutes of the game, they watched the game in the din of singing and samba music. Then the music died. At the break, when it became clear that Brazil will not recover from 0-5 deficit, many people left the area. Those who stayed back watched the humiliation with open mouths and watery eyes. At the end of it, they were hugging and comforting each other.

It’s the same story in all Brazilian cities, towns and villages. It’s a day of a collective heartbreak. It’s a day of collective crying. Though not everyone expected this Brazilian team, playing without their star striker Neymar and captain Thiago Silva, to win but there was hope in 200 million hearts that somehow the team will come together and beat Germany to reach the final. For the past three days, people have been sharing messages and slogans on the social network, asking the country and team to “play for Neymar”. But it was not meant to be.

It’s just one hour since Brazil was kicked out of the World Cup in a humiliating manner, but it seems the country is mourning a death – a death in the family. Entire cities have gone quiet as homes do at the time of funerals. The fast-speaking TV commentators are struggling for words. On the social media, given the Brazilians’ sense of humour, people are already sharing memes and making fun of the way the team played today. But there is no bitterness about the loss. There is no anger against the team. There is also an admiration for the German “artillery” which destroyed the Brazilian defence to bits.

The bars are still open, but the music has stopped. People are still drinking, but fun has gone out. Millions may go to bed with swollen eyes.

In the opening game of the World Cup on June 12, when the Brazilian national anthem was played, some 65,000 people in the stadium kept singing even after the music stopped. By the time the roar ended, tears were rolling down the cheeks of several players, including the team captain Thiago Silva and goalkeeper Julio Cesar. In almost all the games, they played with tears in their eyes. Not today. But today, they made a whole nation shed the tears of blood. Today, Brazil is mourning the death of their football – the beautiful game. And the death of a dream.
Jogo bonito, RIP.

@Waseem you changed the thread title, added the video above the blog, changed the picture....
it would have better if you had merged it the other way around and it would have shown the right thread starter.......
