Birmingham mosque attacks: Man detained under Mental Health Act

A man has been detained under the Mental Health Act after five mosques had their windows smashed in Birmingham.

Officers were called at 2.32am on Thursday 21 March after reports of an attack on a mosque on Birchfield Road in Birmingham.

Police were then called to a second mosque attack on Slade Road in the Erdington area at 3.14am.

Patrols were then started in areas with mosques and officers came across further damage on Witton Road, Aston, and on Broadway, Perry Barr.

At 10.04am police were called to a mosque on Albert Road following reports that a window had been smashed.

A 34-year-old man from Perry Barr handed himself in and was arrested on suspicion of racially aggravated criminal damage.

The investigation is continuing although police are not seeking anyone else in relation to the five incidents.

Police do not believe that he was part of an organised group.

• Masjid Madrassa Faizal Islam, The Broadway, Perry Barr
• Al Habib Trust, Birchfield Road, Aston
• Jamia Mosque, Albert Road, Aston
• Ghousia Mosque, Slade Road, Erdington
• Increased patrols will continue at key locations to reassure communities.

Security advice is being provided to religious establishments across the West Midlands.

A man has been detained under the Mental Health Act in connection to the attacks on five mosques.
The 34-year-old from Perry Barr was arrested yesterday afternoon (March 22) after he handed himself into a Birmingham police station.

Five mosques in the city had windows smashed in the early hours of Thursday morning.
The investigation continues, however, at this stage police are not seeking anyone else in relation to these five incidents.

West Midlands Police do not believe that the man was part of an organised group.
A 38-year-old man from Yardley who was detained by members of the community on Friday, and arrested by officers, has been released without charge and has been ruled out of the on-going enquiry.

Assistant Chief Constable Matt Ward said: “We continue to work in partnership with mosques and loca lcommunities around the West Midlands.

Friday prayers at the Slade Road Mosque
A sixth attack happened this morning (March 23) although police are not linking it to the other five acts of vandalism.

At 6.30am, police were alerted to a madarasa on Cromer Road, Balsall Heath , following reports of criminal damage.

The madarasa (small teaching centre) is opposite Ark Tindal Primary Academy.
CCTV is currently being examined and investigations continue.
