Bill Gates reveals why chickens are the answer to ending poverty

Those who are poking fun of @ImranKhanPTI for the chicken and egg theory of poverty alleviation should pause and read what Bill Gates has to say on the subject.

Why Bill Gates Thinks Raising Chickens Would Solve a Huge Problem

image

If Bill Gates lost $76 billion, which would make him close to penniless, what would he do?

Raise chickens, that’s what.

In a new blog post, the Microsoft co-founder and philanthropist writes that raising chickens is probably the easiest and cheapest way to make money as well as to assure a food supply if you are poor and have access to land.

Clearly, he’s done the research. First, chickens are relatively cheap to maintain. Some breeds can live off what they eat off the ground, he explains, although augmenting that is probably a good idea. As for shelter, hens need just a rudimentary structure to protect their nests and eggs.

Farmers who start with five hens and borrow a neighbor’s rooster to fertilize them can end up with 40 chicks within approximately three months, or a quarter of the year. In West Africa, those chicks can sell for $5 each. Thus, farmers could earn as much as $200 per quarter, or $1,000 per year, in income. That’s not much, but it’s a step up from the extreme poverty line of $700 a year, Gates wrote.

Additionally, eggs are also a protein-rich food source.

Finally, because chickens tend to stick close to home, a parent caring for his or her children at home can also tend the flock.

Gates also offered a way to help. If you read the blog post, watch the video, and answer a question, Gates will donate—on your behalf—a flock of chickens to a poor family. The poultry logistics will be handled by Heifer International, a non-profit group dedicated to providing livestock and training to impoverished people around the world.

This post comes a day after Melinda Gates wrote her own ode to chickens. The couple co-chair the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, which spends billions each year combating disease, hunger, and poverty.

Though it sounds funny but he is sharing a good idea as for small and mini business. For e.g. In Europe countries like Germany Sweden and others on Nordic area are not able to produce all the fruits and vegetables and also meat.

So many of these daily usage products are imported from South America or Spain and also from Middle East

Halal Meat is a v.strong demand in EU and non-Muslim countries and Muslim happy to buy halal even it cost more.

If Pakistan can make a good market to export Halal meat then its really a strong boom for mid size industry

Similarly for Poultry products if the eggs are ORGANIC and tested correctly can exported to other countries. As ORGANIC Eggs are high in demand but less in supply in many EU countries.

Showbaz Khabees tried and tested this Poultry BS in Punjab already. So calm the heck down!

There are tons of other ways to create wealth and employments.

Leave this to local NGOs and they will do it much better than PM of this country.

Bill gates doesn't know anything,

We will ask patwari brothers on this forum for ideas.

Provide equality and tell government to stop picking the winners & losers in private businesses.

Pakistanis will do wonders in few years. Government has been and it still is the major cause of all the fucks ups in Pakistan.

I think if you shutdown government and remove all the taxes, economy will grow at least 4 times faster than the current pace.

When you figure out the priority is poverty elevation and economic financial stability for the low income household. You will see the big picture.

Taxes are part of every govt. on the planet, lowering taxes for the filthy rich business only puts money in their pocket not the population.

All fuckups in Pakistan were due to corruption of the govt., mismanagement of the govt. political appointees sucking up the re souses without performing on their jobs, and lack of future planning. Which is starting to change now.

Either expand your mind or get left behind.

Not to mention, PM gave the example of Malaysia livestock export. But, Does he even realizes that Malaysia have a population of 31.62 million while we have a population of over 200 million. So, Do we even have enough extra livestock to imitate Malaysia?....
Of course industrialization is tool to alleviate poverty at the present conditions.
But the basic question is what are the preferred tools to foster industrialization. There are several alternatives or parallel routs.
Are we to seek foreign investment and loans or to focus on internal resources: Is farming/natural resources or urban services/real estate industry the key: Are we to rely on bankers/monetary and competition or we need to enrich people to accumulate capital. Hi-tech multinationals or direct state invest in small industry . Are we to focus on human investment/public health to enhance the capacity of labor or jump into hi-tech and industrial estates etc. and a dozen more.

Here, livestock is just an example among several other similar measures; Many theorize that enrichment and accumulation at lower level and empowerment is one of the avenues towards industrialization and sustainable/environment friendly development. Of course you disagree with this stupidity but please discuss ideas on merit - then to nitpick on our stupidity and and ignorance. (by the way everyone knows the population differences or about the future potential of livestock industry - such truism is useless and unnecessary)

I feel sorry that IK was trying to convey a simple and basic ideas of self reliance which could not be understood by the holders of multiple degrees.Their response was indeed celestial making me wonder and thinking of them to be like schoolboys in uniform diddling with their little peckers

““Dutch agriculture is highly intensive and export focused,” [a report on the Dutch food market for US exporters] said. “Total agricultural exports for 2015 are estimated at $78.3 billion, making the Netherlands the second largest exporter of food and agriculture. The temperate climate, fertile soils, and educated labor force make the Netherlands a highly productive agricultural producer. However, the large and sophisticated food processing industry accounts for a significant portion of exports. The Netherlands is a small country geographically, but with the Port of Rotterdam and the confluence of four major rivers, the E.U. traders and importers are here.”
