Re: A Lecture by Professor Ahmed Rafiq Akhtar

return of prophet isa and coming of imaam mahdi need to be understood in their proper contexts.

mahdi simply means revivalist and surely amongst muslims there arise revivalists of islam and muslims every now and again. so if any particular revivalist is accepted according to ahadith there is nothing wrong with it.

return of prophet isa is altogether a different matter. It is not possible that prophet isa can come back but it is possible that mahdi and isa are same person in the sense of meanings of their qualities eg prophet isa is also called maseeha=revivalist. Therefore if we accept that some person or persons with such attributes may arise then there is no problem between the quran and the hadith or self evident realities of world before us.

I do not agree with shia concept of imaam mahdi that he is already here but is in hiding for last so many centuries. That is utterly absurd just like concept that jesus is alive in the heavens ready to be sent back. same problem here too.

We must not believe in absurd things and call it islam. That is simply put utter ignorance. We should only believe in evidence based concepts or the ideas as islam otherwise we are giving people excuse to laugh at or attack islam for absurdity. This way we lose our own credibility as people appointed for divine mission amongst mankind. Islam is not a closed shop just for ourselves that we don't care what others say about us or what we claim to believe. We must see what the rest of our human family thinks and why and see how we may be of help to them in helping them find the right direction.

Our problem is we do not see consequences of our beliefs and actions for rest of humanity. We have a very important role to play in our human family and we therefore need to educate ourselves to a level whereby we participate therein effectively. We cannot isolate ourselves from rest of human family because that is not what Allah has brought about this ummah for. We are suppose to be so sensible people that people seek our leadership instead of avoiding us as if we are some kind of fatal infectious disease.
