Leader is perhaps the most abused word in politics. But again Pakistan has been "led" to become a dysfunctional state over the past 65 years by a little less than a dozen people. The most crude form of the word leader is that when people accept someone as a guide. But in Pakistan, most "leaders" were non elected. So yes, we do have leaders, for good or for worse.
Mian Nawaz Sharif is a popular "leader". He has millions of voters. Twice Prime Minister, twice chief Minister, Nawaz Sharif is the most experienced politician in Pakistan. Anywhere else in the world, the leader of a failed entity would be held responsible for the mess he created. In Pakistan we call it "TAJURBA". Mian sahab has a lot of tajurba, actually in 1980's Mian Sb himself was a tajurba, which worked.
After a 10 year vacation in his second home in Saudia, Nawaz Sharif returned, claiming to be NEW AND IMPROVED. Or should I say, democratic and principled. He played second to the Govt. for 5 years for which I really commend him, waiting for his turn and expecting that PPP will also respect his mandate when his "baari" comes. With PML Q demolished, PPP self-destructed, Nawaz Sharif was cast in stone to be the a third time PM. He didnt want turn coats in his party, he wanted to punish his old peers for helping Musharraf, he was anti-establishment.
Principled and democratic, New and Improved. Nawaz sharif disappointed like the local detergent. When push comes to shove, Nawaz Sharif resorted to his old self, running towards EVERY TURN COAT in the country, every Establishment made party in country and bar Musharraf himself, he has the whole PML Q in his party. Nawaz Sharif couldnt handle the pressure, period.
Let bygones be bygones. With PML F and Nationalist parties in Sindh as his allies, 1) Will Nawaz Sharif be able to make smaller administrative Units?
2) Will Nawaz Sharif decentralise power by local body elections (he never held any in Punjab during his Govt?)
3) Will Nawaz Sharif impose tax on landlords? Yeah right
No...nothing is going to happend. No reforms will take place. I bet he will make thousands of streets and big fly-overs...and we love them, dont we...but ACTUAL reforms? you can kiss my brown behind.
Congratulation Nawaz Sharif, you have won the election on paper. Now we wait another 5 years for the people of Pakistan to smarten up.
