Zia did amazing unthinkable in 1979. Pakistan is alive today because of his plan. There was a definite plan of USSR Army to run over Pakistan in summer 1980. Zia planned ''the bear trap'' for them in Afghanistan. Pakistanis would realize this after thousands of years. Secretly intercepted messages were clear that Pakistan would be invaded overnight by USSR army followed by installing a dummy care taker government in Islamabad run by Surkhas (Reds or Socialist loving people). There were no benefits for USSR staying only in Afghanistan. Actual goal was access to warm waters of Arabian Sea through Pakistan. Zia decided to stop them in Afghanistan. If this would have not done, current Pakistan would still be a part of USSR.

So using another nation to defend oneself is an "amazing unthinkable" thing to do? Sounds like what the US is doing to us in more ways than one. Whats more, doing it covertly by arming local warlords, exploiting and training people in Pakistan to fight the "war" in the name of jehad, helping in using drug money to finance the whole war, yes it all sounds very honourable. Frankly, in the scenario you have explained I would much rather have had my leader to be brave and honourable enough to officially declare war and send troops to fight with the Afghans with support from the US.
we got nothing to do wid Afghanistan or dair jihad or any thing wid Mr karzae
USSR brocken because of imploding economy due to decade old war inside Afghanistan. Pakistan fought proxy war with USSR inside Afghanistn. There would have been only one winner. This time it was Pakistan. USSR would have never brocken otherwise. History tells USSR was expanding by invading neighbouring coutries since last century. Pakistanis not only resisted but also fought for their lives. Salaam to them.

There may be other factors but the war in Afghanistan is major contributor. The history of the Soviet Union from 1982 through 1991 is critical in its collapse. Due to the years of Soviet military build-up at the expense of domestic development, economic growth stagnated. Failed attempts at reform, a standstill economy, and the success of Pakistan's ISI against the Soviet Union's forces in the war in Afghanistan led to a general feeling of discontent, especially in the Baltic republics and Eastern Europe.
