So using another nation to defend oneself is an "amazing unthinkable" thing to do? Sounds like what the US is doing to us in more ways than one. Whats more, doing it covertly by arming local warlords, exploiting and training people in Pakistan to fight the "war" in the name of jehad, helping in using drug money to finance the whole war, yes it all sounds very honourable. Frankly, in the scenario you have explained I would much rather have had my leader to be brave and honourable enough to officially declare war and send troops to fight with the Afghans with support from the US.

Totally wrong.......There is no USSR for more than 20 years now so how can pakistan still be part of it?......assuming pakistan was run over by soviets in 70s, it would have been independent two decades back like many central asian and east european countries ......

we should have some treaty wid USSR let dem govern afghastan dat was not owr war nor dis 1 at least bel of power would b maintained no refugees no drugs no arms

Even if pakistan was taken over by soviets USSR would have collapsed.....afghanistan war hastened the collapse by couple of years.....it just could not have sustained itself with or without the war....

There may be other factors but the war in Afghanistan is major contributor. The history of the Soviet Union from 1982 through 1991 is critical in its collapse. Due to the years of Soviet military build-up at the expense of domestic development, economic growth stagnated. Failed attempts at reform, a standstill economy, and the success of Pakistan's ISI against the Soviet Union's forces in the war in Afghanistan led to a general feeling of discontent, especially in the Baltic republics and Eastern Europe.
