Another dimension is that Urdu newspapers are for the masses thus have the necessary ingredients of sensationalism, populist fantasies and just a touch of vulgarity. English papers on the other hand are supposed to be targeting the educated class thus you see some real journalism and opinions there. It is a sad fact that the opinions which are presented in English papers can cause mass disturbances if translated in Urdu and published. Not a pretty picture of the degree to which our society is segmented. A good experiment can be to match Jang and The News and see the difference there. I once read an opinion in The News lambasting Americans for intolerance in the background of a case where a legislator was caught indulging in homosexual activities in a public bathroom. The gust of the opinion was that American due to intolerance have compelled the legislator to practice his sexual inclinations in such a place and that reflects poorly on tolerance level of American society. Can anyone even think of sharing such opinions in An Urdu paper?
