A Pakistani passenger plane crashed near the capital, Islamabad, on Friday evening and at least 127 people on board were feared dead, officials said.
The plane belonged to Bhoja Air, a private Pakistani airline, with 118 passengers and 9 crew members on board.
Bad weather was reported to be the cause of the crash, according to initial reports in local news media.
A statement by the country’s defense ministry said an investigation has been ordered.
Bhoja Air, based in the southern port city of Karachi, began flights in 1993 but suspended operations in 2001 because of financial trouble. It had resumed operations early this year. Friday’s flight was the first on the Karachi-Islamabad route.
The crash comes nearly two years after an Airblue plane fell in the Margalla Hills near Islamabad in fog and heavy rain. It was the deadliest crash in Pakistan (http://topics.nytimes.com/top/news/international/countriesandterritories/pakistan/index.html?inline=nyt-geo)’s history, and left 152 passengers dead.
The plane took off at 5 p.m. from Karachi and was scheduled to land at the Islamabad airport Friday evening.
Witnesses said they saw a fireball in the sky at about 6:40 p.m. before the plane plummeted in a village, Hussainabad, about six miles away from the Islamabad’s international airport.
Saifur Rehman, a rescue official, said the plane wreckage was spread over a large area and the debris had caught fire. “There are dead bodies lying all around,” he said, adding that the plane had crashed in a neighborhood with few residents. At least four houses were destroyed, but it was not immediately clear if there were any casualties on the ground.
Rescue workers worked through pouring rain to retrieve dead bodies and search for survivors. Local TV networks showed images of the charred debris of the Boeing 737-200 aircraft.
Grief-stricken relatives gathered at the airports in Islamabad and Karachi as soon as news about the air crash spread, sending shockwaves throughout the country.
Arshad Mehmood, a former navy pilot who lives near the crash site, told Geo News that he saw the aircraft “descending very rapidly” before the crash.
He blamed poor visibility for the crash, citing a cumulonimbus storm cloud, which is heavy, dense, of large vertical extent, and considered to be the most hazardous for aviation.
“The weather was very rough,” Mr. Mehmood said. “The pilot could not control the plane.”
Pervez George, a spokesman of the Civil Aviation Authority, said it was too early to talk about the cause of the crash. “Lets not speculate so soon,” Mr. George said.

According to Talat Hussain, Bhoja closed in 2011 because of their inability to pay their bills to the civil aviation society but started again in march of this year..so they have been flying for a few weeks only..

We should demand the Black box from the Govt, and the reasons for this tragedy.
Those responsible should be dealt with accordingly.
This is the 2nd big Aviation tragedy in last 2 years, i smell something fishy around here and it is outrageous, some one is to blame our nalaik govt should come up with a proper and thorough investigation!

no i just read a column in a newspaper saying that this had been activated on pressure of a very strong political group,
I have just been on the company's website but her naqme is not there.
but Talat hussain just mentioned that hafeez sheikh was involved in this company's relaunch.
anyway this is a fact that were ever ppp is involved things are very very fishy, lets see what happens.

Accidents can happen and I'm sure that Bhoja Air did not plan this accident. We don't know what is in store for us in the future, so no one can predict.
What is important is that if all technical requirements for an aircraft to fly were met in letter and spirit, then we cannot blame the airline. Lets wait for the technical inquiry and then start blaming.
As some past experience, no pilot will take an aircraft in the air, unless he is sure of the air worthiness of the aircraft.
We as a nation just have fun ridiculing, blaming and trying to score points by making humiliating remarks. We have actually become very good at this.
If we can't do anything positive to help our fellow Pakistani's, at least we shouldn't start the blame game without any solid evidence.
